Personal Reflections & Essays

Who will take care of you when you're old? You'd better hope it's not a nursing home because they are licensed to kill. For my sisters and me, it's time to start name calling--and the name is Island Health & Rehab Center of Merritt Island, Florida.

What was Eve's problem? I think she was emotionally ill. I mean, God intended for her to be a companion to Adam, yet right off the bat, she starts fixing his meals--setting a precedent that we women have had to live with for thousands of years!! So, Thanks A Lot, Eve, Because It's All YOUR Fault.

How can two people with no common sense be married for 48 years without killing themselves, each other or any of their six daughters? In "No Common Sense," you'll see why my five sisters and I are lucky we made it out alive.

Do we ever reach an age when our parents aren't trying to teach us something? In "The Art of Thriftiness," my thrifty (and crafty?) mother teaches me yet another lesson.

I don't know anyone in Florida who hasn't had an unexpected wildlife encounter, but I do think I have more than my share. Read about some of these animal escapades in my essay, "I'll Take Florida, Critters and All," published in Florida Wildlife Magazine.

She has everything...a new book contract, a fabulous website, and she lives with her handsome husband and two beautiful children. I live with my fat cat and my Chinese roommate. In my essay "I Hate Samantha St. Claire," my true character shows, and believe me, it's not a pretty sight.

Why can't women view aging the way men do? Men look in the mirror and continue to appreciate what they see. "This Thing Called Aging " tells it from a woman's point of view.

"I had to call 911 last night..." Thus starts out my essay entitled "A Letter of Apology" about the lack of care in the healthcare industry. As I write in my essay to those of you out there who have chosen the healthcare profession as your career and yet treat your patients without care and compassion, "YOU made the choice. If you aren't able to administer with CARE, then do the world a favor and get out of the healthCARE profession; you don't belong there." Published in November 2002's issue of EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES magazine.

I recently sent a letter of complaint to Mattel, Inc., and was surprised to receive their reply that another company manufactures the product in question for them, and Mattel is, therefore, not responsible for anything to do with it. I beg to differ. When your name is on something, you are responsible for EVERYTHING that has to do with that product. Shame on you, Mattel! Read A Letter to Mattel, Inc. and see why this toy company is part of the anorexia problem.

"Disquieting thoughts ran endlessly through my mind: what will I do if… how am I going to… what if I can't… I felt completely alone with my fears, and now, as I listened to the sermon, the reason was so very clear. I had let God slip out of my life. I had let God slip out of my life and it had happened so gradually that I hadn't even noticed." Living in Faith

"Life is a test, and nobody gets off scot-free," says my mother, and though it may seem trite, her words have helped me more than I can say. Read about my battle with a life-long "test" in, "Hello, My Name is Stephie...and I am a Trichotillomanic."
