Monarch Caterpillars on Milkweed Monarch caterpillar in J position to pupate
Monarch Pupa - This little guy was squirming around inside until he got situated! Monarch Pupa - What's left of the caterpillar skin is at the top and will fall off.
Monarch Pupa - finished and waiting The casing becomes clear just minutes before the butterfly begins to emerge.
See where the clear casing (to the right) is being pushed out by the butterfly's legs. The butterfly drops out and hangs onto the casing for dear life! He is very weak.
As blood begins to pump through his veins, his wings begin to unfurl and he pulls himself up. The Monarch now hangs out to dry(upper left). See empty shell in lower right corner.

A different Monarch that emerged the same day.
