Handpainted Photographs
by Stephie Smith
I took these pictures with a regular 35 mm camera using black and white film.  I developed them in my darkroom, then used sepia toner to change photo to shades of brown (see backgrounds, which are unpainted).  Then I matted them and painted them using Marshall's photo paints, pastels (chalks), and Marshall's photo pencils.  Finally, I sprayed them with a matte spray.

I watched while this little girl ate a McDonald's hamburger, 4 chicken nuggets, and an order of French fries.  When she went for the ice cream I couldn't resist taking her picture.  Her name is Allie.
These 2 sisters wanted to give their mother a photo for Mother's Day but they didn't like professional photos.  The girl on the right actually had very dark brown hair but liked the way I colored it in the photo so much that she had her hair color changed to match it!

Milette Bachmat was my very first subject.  We worked for an arms dealer in LA (she had moved here from Israel). I did a better job with the first photo I painted for her, but for some strange reason, she wanted to give that one to her husband!  (And yes, her hair really was slightly purple.)
This little girl was a dollbaby.  In fact, her parents were blessed to have 2 beautiful little girls.  This one was the older, and looked like her father.  The other little girl was blonde with blue eyes, just like her mother.  And yes, I took and painted pictures of her, too! This was one of my earliest ones.  I didn't do a great job on the hair because I worked it too much and the photograph paper lost the highlights:-(
The photo on the left was what I had to work with.  It was blurry, scratched up and overexposed and 1/3 of the picture was of the dashboard!  The above were scanned from 3x5 photos since I gave the painted photo to the daughter of this couple.
My nephew, Brendon Bookman.  I don't know why I cut part of his arms off when I took a picture of the hand painted photo (which I gave to my sister).  The first time in the darkroom, I had this pic flipped over.  I didn't notice it until I started to paint it and Cypress Gardens was backwards and reversed!
